Verre Anglais, Crémant de Bourgogne 2017

from £28.00

Verre Anglais is a top quality Crémant de Bourgogne, fizz made in using the traditional method, produced in Chablis from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. It has a fascinating brand story in that it’s finally an answer to the age-old debate of who invented Champagne and very much a coming together of both French and English efforts. The English creating the bottle strong enough to contain the sparkling wine, of course, hence the name.

Most importantly, this is serious fizz, and delivers impressively for just £28 a bottle, for the 2017 vintage, a wine with seven years’ worth of maturity. Showcased recently to all round acclaim at Clos Fine Wine’s recent Guy Ritchie dinner, the wine is pale lemon in colour colour, with the tiniest hint of blush and delicate bubbles. On the nose, there are intoxicating aromas of crisp green apple, grapefruit, flecks of yuzu and freshly baked lemon tart. On the palate this is voluptuous thanks to the Pinot Noir, with intense, ripe fruits and layers of complexity which unfurl over time.

Perfect as an apéritif or with food, the late, great Gary Rhodes was one of the founding investors and his family remains very much involved, this is a unique fizz, made by Brits in France, and well worth a case!
