My wine bargain of the year, by a mile. Robert Oatley Finisterre Chardonnay 2020 is a medium-bodied Chardonnay from the Margaret River region of Western Australia. This sumptuous, racy Chardonnay is sourced from three mature vineyards in central and southern Margaret River and made with whole-bunches pressed into 70% new French oak barriques for fermentation, before maturing in barriques for nine months.
The nose is full of yuzu lemon, flecks of melon, white peach, nectarine rind and the palate has monumental acidity and vibrancy, with a seam of mouth-watering salinity. There is superb structure here for a wine at this price and the fruit is gorgeously ripe, without ever losing freshness.
At just £24 a bottle, this is staggering white wine and a total bargain - it should be £32-£35. Just nine cases are available.
