Moulin des Chênes, Lirac 2017
One of the joys of running Clos Fine Wine is finding hidden vinous gems that no one else has got their hands on. Lirac is a region in the Southern Rhône, just across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and whilst it shares a bundle of similarities with its illustrious neighbour, it is sold at a mere fraction of the price.
For me this is the perfect barbecue wine, going so well with a range of foods, from T-bone steaks, to miso aubergine, tomato salads and cheese platters. It is fragrant and has great body without ever being unwieldy - it is one of those wines that those who don’t like reds are attracted to right away.
On the nose is sweet wild strawberry, raspberry. red cherry, mulberry, sweet smoke, rosehip and some juniper. Lirac’s real hallmark is its sensuousness on the palate, velvety smooth with fleshy red fruits, gentle spice and bags of acidity to keep the wine spinning long after you’ve swallowed. For £14 a bottle this is an utter steal and a must have this summer.
