Florent Rouve, Mâcon-Lugny 'Les Crays Vers Vaux' Vieilles Vignes 2020

from £24.50

£24 per bottle | £23 per bottle for orders of 24 bottles or more.

Finding a white Burgundy for Clos Fine Wine that didn’t break the bank and which delivered real structure and complexity has been one of my key missions across the past few months. I have tasted 53 white Burgundies in that bracket and this gorgeous old vine Mâcon-Lugny ‘Les crays Vers Vaux’ from ‘emerging superstar’ producer Florent Rouve was by far top of the tree.

When I tasted it I asked the supplier how much stock was left, globally: the response was 24 cases of 12 only, so I took the lot there and then! After I’ve taken two cases for myself that leaves 22 cases remaining, and I honestly cannot recommend this wine enough. In fact, I am so convinced I’ve uncovered a vinous gem that if for some reason you disagree, then I’ll happily take the wine back!

Leading global wine critic, Neal Martin, himself tried the wine en primeur and was mightily impressed for the price-point, writing:

“The 2020 Mâcon-Lugny Les Crays Vers Vaux has a lively bouquet with apple blossom, hints of wild peach emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a zesty opening, fresh and vibrant with a persistent and quite saline finish. Very fine”

As the prices of white Burgundy have sky-rocketed over the past few years and even once reliable satellites like Chablis have seen eye-watering price-hikes, boutique producers in Mâcon like Florent have come to the rescue, offering wines from exceptional plots, in this case on high up the hill, over limestone terroirs with prestigious older vines (vieilles vignes) for prices that are laughably low next to comparable wines from the Còte d’Or.

This is a wine that will impress anyone who drinks it, whether it be on a sunny day in the garden, for a dinner party or as an springtime aperitif. When I tasted it I wrote: A gorgeously inviting nose, with a kaleidoscope of golden apple, pear, yuzu and flecks of butter. A strikingly crystalline mineral structure with racy acidity to maintain freshness, whilst never losing that generous mouthfeel and luxurious finish. A must buy.
